In a country comprised of 3.5 million, four out of five people lack access to basic health and education. Only a quarter of the population has access to safe drinking water, and less than one in five has access to human waste collection and disposal facilities.

But it is not only a lack of physical infrastructure and access to facilities that pose the main obstacles. A wide gap in the area of knowledge and awareness concerning basic hygiene practices also leaves citizens particularly vulnerable to preventable diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. At present, only 1 in 20 Liberians practice safe hygiene behaviour.

The Consortium’s aims at increasing access to WaSH services and infrastructure by working to:

  • Improve Access to safe drinking water for 661, 337 beneficiaries (66% of the target population)

  • Improve Access to sanitation for 277, 792 beneficiaries (29% of target population)

  • Ensure Safe hygiene practice promotion in 245, 072 beneficiaries (26% of target population)

Through constructing hand-dug wells and community latrines, rehabilitating hand pumps and urban water points, and creating safe waste disposal solutions – while at the same time empowering beneficiaries with the knowledge to safely use and maintain each of these initiatives – the Liberia WaSH Consortium is working together to ensure that its work is both immediately effective as well as sustainable in the long term.
